Pro’s and Con’s of Nuclear Power

nuclear power

nuclear power

Nuclear power is a much argued about issue as there are pros and cons for using nuclear power. Nuclear power generates a large amount of energy, is very cost effective, and does not contribute to air pollution. Some of the limitations are the disposal of nuclear waste, the dangers of radioactive substances, and the limitations of areas to produce it considering the risks. Nuclear power is an issue often talked about considering its dangers but it also has many benefits as well.

Nuclear power has many benefits for producing energy from nuclear reactors. Environmentally nuclear energy’s impact is very little. The power generated from nuclear power, which is a green energy, does not contribute any emissions to the atmosphere while other types of fossil fuels generate greenhouse gasses and poisonous elements which can lead to ozone problems, acid rain, and global warming. Nuclear power is relatively inexpensive compared with other types of energy. Uranium, which is the raw fuel, is less expensive than oil, natural gas, or coal. Therefore because nuclear power in inexpensive it generates into lower electricity costs for consumers. Nuclear power is a reliable source of power as nuclear power plants produce large amounts of power on a consistent basis. Therefore there are viable reasons to using nuclear power.

There are also dangers and risks involved in using nuclear power. The preeminent limitation in using nuclear power is how to dispose or store nuclear waste. Radiation that is leaked from spent rods that lose the ability to produce heat could lead to a dangerous scenario. It takes thousands of years for radiation to be extinguished and the radioactive waste must be contained to remain safe. Disposal of radioactive waste is a concern as landfills damage the environment and it must be protected as not to fall into the wrong hands.

Radiation, which can be spread by winds, is dangerous to humans and animals alike and can contaminate large areas. After a reactor melts it stays in an area for many years and that radioactivity also remains. Since nuclear power plants can be constructed anywhere it is hard to find communities that will allow them there considering the dangers. Despite the inexpensive electricity, employment opportunities, and tax incentives many communities do not want a plant in their community. Communities do not want another Chernyobal. Furthermore there are many risks and dangers with nuclear power.
