Appointment is an arrangement to meet or visit someone at a particular time and place.

Making an appointment means you plan to meet or visit someone at a particular time and place.

A. Making an Appointment

To make an appointment with someone, you can use the following expressions:

  • I’d like you to come and see me in …
  • I want to make an appointment to see Mr/Mrs …
  • I’d like to make an appointment with …

B. Accepting an Appointment

To accept an appointment, you can use the following expressions:

  • Sure, I will be waiting for you.
  • It’s a deal.
  • All right, see you there.
  • Yes, I will come.
  • Be there on time.
  • I will be there soon.

C. Declining an Appointment

To decline an appointment, you can use the following expressions:

  • I don’t think I can.
  • No, I can’t.
  • I’m sorry. I’m busy.
  • I am afraid, I can’t.
  • I am sorry, I can’t.
  • Sorry, I think I have an appointment with someone else.

D. Dialogue

Situation: Dewi makes a telephone call with David to make an appointment.

Dewi:Hello, David. How are you?

David: Why?
Dewi: I need to meet you to talk about our plan to have holiday in Bandung.

II. Reservation

A. Making a Reservation

Reservation is an arrangement in which something such as a seat on an aircraft or a table at a restaurant is kept for you. We usually book a hotel room, a restaurant table, a flight, a tour, etc.

In order to be able make a reservation, you need to understand the following matters.

A. Booking

When you book something, you can use the following expressions:

  • I would like to book…
  • I’d like to make a reservation
  • Do you have any vacancies?
  • I would like to reserve a room
  • I would like to reserve…in the name of…
  • I’d like a single room / double room
  • Could we have an extra bed?
  • I’d like a room with a sea view/ a balcony/ a bath…

B. Asking Terms of Reservation

To ask various matters related to a reservation, you can use the following expressions:

  • Can you offer me any discount?
  • Is breakfast included?
  • What’s the price per night?
  • Have you got anything bigger?
  • Have you got anything cheaper?

C. Asking About Facilities

To ask about facilities, you can use the following expressions:

  • Do you allow pets?
  • Do you have a car park?
  • Does the room have air conditioning?
  • Does the room have internet access?
  • Is there a swimming pool?
  • Is there a sauna?

D. Changing Reservation

To change a reservation, you can use the following expressions:

  • I am afraid I must ask you to alter my booking from … to …
  • Would it be possible to change the date of the booking to …
  • I Would like to change my reservation, please

E. Cancelling Reservation

To cancel a reservation, you can use the following expressions:

F. Dialogue

  1. Making a hotel room reservation

A: I’d like to reserve a hotel room.

A: I’m planning to visit New York from Friday, April 14 until Monday, April 17.
