The iPhone is still the apple of many consumers’ eyes, but the popular gadget has got some competition, PCMag.com’s 24th annual Readers’ Choice Awards showed.

Apple’s smartphone was the favorite of the magazine’s readers using Verizon Wireless.

Among AT&T phones, however, it played a close second fiddle to Samsung devices that use the new Windows Phone 7. While they only have a small sliver of the market, those phones, such as the Focus, got higher marks for their reliability, call quality and gaming chops.

“People love the [iPhone] platform. It’s got all the apps that everyone wants – but there are definitely some contenders out there,” said PCMag Features Editor Eric Griffith.

Readers in the poll also liked phones made by HTC that use Google’s Android operating system, such as Sprint’s EVO 4G and Verizon’s Droid Incredible.

Verizon’s version of the iPhone, which it launched in February, ranked on par with AT&T’s version, except when it came to call quality. That’s where the AT&T iPhone fell behind, rating poorly even compared to other AT&T phones.

“Overall, AT&T users still love the iPhone,” Griffith said. “It’s the religious fervor of Apple followers coming to light.”

Research In Motion’s BlackBerry devices, widely used in the corporate world, got mainly average or below average scores.

Carriers TracFone and T-Mobile both got the best scores for their prepaid phones.

As for carriers overall, Verizon earned the Readers’ Choice Award for a fifth year in a row, receiving above average marks in most categories. It shared the title with smaller rival U.S. Cellular, which is only available in about half the country.

Verizon users weren’t as happy with the carrier’s fees. It ranked as the second worst in that category, just ahead of AT&T, which was also slammed for poor reception and dropped calls.

In a sign that multitasking smartphones are taking over the world, the survey showed that over three-quarters of respondents use one as their main phone, up from about half last year.

Carriers have beefed up their smartphone marketing in order to capture higher fees from data plans, making them more of a must-have, Griffith said.

“It’s the cool thing, and I would argue also smartphones are replacing laptops in some cases,” he said. “You don’t hear people talking about their flip phone anymore.”
