Menyarankan untuk Melakukan atau Tidak Melakukan Sesuatu

Tujuan Pembelajaran

Setelah mempelajari materi ini kalian diharapkan mampu:

  1. menyarankan seseorang untuk melakukan sesuatu;
  2. menyarankan seseorang untuk tidak melakukan sesuatu;
  3. merespon dengan tepat ungkapan saran dari orang lain.

I. Ungkapan Saran untuk Melakukan Sesuatu

Ketika menyarankan seseorang untuk melakukan sesuatu, kita bisa menggunakan ungkapan-ungkapan berikut ini:

1. You should /really should ….

Examples:

-You should charge your cellphone now.

-You really should leave now, otherwise you’ll miss the train.

2. You’d better ….

Examples:

-You’d better cook your own food.

-You’d better finish your homework tonight.

3. If I were you, I would ….

Examples:

-If I were you, I would leave her.

-If I were you, I would exercise everyday.

4. Why don’t you …?

-Why don’t you stay here with me?

-Why don’t you go fishing with them?

5. You can ….

Examples:

-You can buy the computer now if you want to get best price.

-You can try it again next time.

6. I suggest you to ….

Examples:

-I suggest you to visit your dentist this afternoon.

-I suggest you to eat row food if you want to live healthy.

7. I recommend you that ….

Examples:

-I recommend you that you study hard if you want to pass the examination.

-I recommend you that you practice your English everyday if you want to speak English fluently.

8. You ought to ….

Examples:

-You ought to finish the annual report tomorrow.

-You ought to serve your clients with the best services.

9. How about … ?

Examples:

-How about cleaning the house together?

-How about using a mold to make this cake the same in size?

10. What about …?

Examples:

-What about making some tropical fruit juice for him?

-What about serving Indonesian traditional food for the dinner?

II. Ungkapan Saran untuk Tidak Melakukan Sesuatu

Pada dasarnya ungkapan-ungkapan saran untuk melakukan sesuatu yang telah kita bahas di atas dapat kita gunakan untuk menyarankan seseorang untuk tidak melakukan sesuatu. Kita hanya perlu mengubah kalimatnya sehingga bermakna saran untuk tidak melakukan sesuatu atau bermakna larangan halus. Umumnya hal ini dilakukan dengan menambahkan kata not. Baiklah akan saya bahas beberapa.

1.You shouldn’t ….

Examples:

-You shouldn’t do it to your best friend.

-You shouldn’t waste your time for something useless.

2. If I were you, I wouldn’t ….

Examples:

-If I were you, I wouldn’t give him that much money.

-If I were you, I wouldn’t buy that expensive bag.

3. I don’t think you should ….

Examples:

-I don’t think you should give me too many gifts.

-I don’t think you should work that hard. It’s not good for your health.

4. You’d better not ….

Examples:

-You’d better not speak English fast with beginners.

-You’d better not play game all the day. You should help your parents.

III. Respon

Untuk merespon saran dari orang lain kita bisa menggunakan dua jenis ungkapan, yaitu menerima dan menolak. Mari kita bahas satu persatu.

A. Menerima Saran

Untuk menerima saran dari orang lain, kita bisa menggunakan ungkapan:

  1. Yes, I’d like/ love to.
  2. That sounds like a good idea.
  3. Thank you/Thanks.
  4. I’ll do/try that.
  5. Why didn’t I think of that?

B. Menolak Saran

Untuk menolak saran dari orang lain, kita bisa menggunakan ungkapan:

  1. I tried that, but…
  2. Thanks, but that won’t work/ help because …
  3. That’s a good idea, but …
  4. No, I’d rather not.
  5. I don’t think I like it.

IV. Dialog

Please practice the following dialogue!

Stephanie: My hobby is cooking. I practice cooking everyday but still I can’t cook delicious food as your mom does.

Siti: What kind of food do you like to cook?

Stephanie: I like home-cooked food.

Siti: Really?

Stephanie: Sure.

Siti: Why don’t you come to my house tomorrow? I’ll ask my mom to teach you how to cook delicious food.

Stephanie: That sounds like a good idea. But do you think your mom can do it? I know she’s very busy.

Siti: I’m sure she can. Tomorrow is holiday, isn’t it?

Stephanie: Okay. By the way, what will we cook tomorrow?

Siti: How about cooking ‘rendang jengkol’?

Stephanie: Oh my God! No, I’d rather not.

Siti: Why not?

Stephanie: It’s very smelly. My mom won’t stop grumbling if our bathroom smells bad.

Siti: I see. Okey just cook uduk rice then. What do you think?

Stephanie: Yes, I’d love to.
